Work Experience

During first term we completed two weeks of work experience. Our first was in Columb Barracks, Mullingar with the 4th FAR. This was a fantastic week and some of us are thinking about a career I the armed forces.
For our second week we chose our own work placements. The week was a real eye-opener but we were generally very pleased with what we experienced. Some lads have even been offered part time jobs. I’m not sure that anyone would have enough time for a part time job this year though.
All the guys in Transition Year want to thank their teachers and particularly our coordinators, Ms. Ainscough and Mr. Flanagan for their great support and encouragement. We look forward to an equally busy and productive second half of the year.

TY a Doss? Not in Our School!

Our normal school day is not so normal! We have many new subjects on the curriculum such as Careers, Spanish, Cookery, Computers, Public Speaking, Music and Bridge. Mr. Quinn has organised a first year mentoring scheme. Each TY student mentors a first year to help him make the transition from Primary to Secondary school. We don’t know who’s learning more though!
Despite our busy class schedule, many of us are involved in extra-curricular activities such as u-16 hurling and football, the Green Schools project, a school Bank and a homework club.
Anyone who thinks transition year is a doss better think again! We have been very successful in our first term winning prizes in Poetry Speaking competitions(Luke Dunoghue),  The Dragon’s Den competition and our Bt young Scientist(Michael Cox).

Transition Year Report

Our Transition Year got off to an excellent start with a 3-day trip to Achill Adventure Centre. It was a brilliant way to start the year and to allow us to get to know our Transition Year coordinators, Mr. Flanagan and Ms. Ainscough. Since then we have been very busy. In that short space of time we have done many interesting and challenging things such as G.A.A. coaching, Slam poetry workshops, Mentoring first years, a History Tour of Mullingar and preparation for our Presidents Award.
The Acorn Project, Organized by Mr. Dillon, Involves visiting the elderly patients in St. Mary’s Care Centre. It continues to be a great success. The patients are delighted to see us on Mondays and we our strengthening our relationships with the patients.
On Thursdays we split into groups for Dance and Yoga, both of which are surprisingly good fun and not as “girlish” as we expected. Look out for our dance routine in the talent show!
The most moving part of first term was undoubtedly a speech from Holocaust survivor Mr. Tomi Reichental. It was a privilege to hear him speak about his life.
The big news now is our Talent Show which will, we hope, bring first term to a great close. Over 200 pupils will be performing and there will be a few surprise appearances’ from the staff as well.
