Hurlers travel to Kilkenny and return with Leinster Title.
Having been crowned North Leinster Champions some months ago, our under 16 hurlers had been long awaiting their provincial final show down with Johnstown of Kilkenny. As the 18/19 academic year drew to a close, many believed the fixture would never take place. However those in Coláiste Mhuire sensed a provincial decider was the only fitting end to the year. Finding a time to suit both schools proved difficult but eventually Tuesday May 14th was set in stone. The Kilkenny side were awarded home advantage and so the Mullingar men had to take to the road.
Cheered on by fellow students, CBS took to an unfamiliar field and found them selves battling a worthy opponent and a strong breeze. Our boys fell behind and entered the dressing rooms at half time with a 7 point deficit. Whatever Mr. Lawler and Mr. Kelly said at half time will have to be bottled and sold, as it inspired a five minute flurry where we scored 1 goal and 3 points. From there the game remained tit for tat as both sides exchanged scores. After 60 minutes of play the sides couldn't be separated and extra time was necessary. The scoring trend of the first 60 minutes was continued in the next 15 as the Kilkenny and Westmeath sides both added to their tallies. However the final 5 minutes saw the boys in green make one last push to eventually cross the line with 3 to spare. Coláiste Mhuire Mullingar, Under 16 Leinster Hurling Champions 2019.
