Academic Year 2025/2026

Junior Cycle | Coláiste Mhuire

Coláiste Mhuire Secondary School has a proud and well-established reputation for academic excellence, with high expectations and student achievement at the core of all teaching and learning. Consistently recognised as one of the top-performing schools in the Midlands, the school continues to deliver outstanding outcomes, with over 95% of Leaving Certificate students progressing to third-level education,

including university, institutes of technology and further education pathways. Year on year, students achieve the highest Leaving Certificate grades across a broad range of subjects, with many also securing prestigious university scholarships in recognition of their academic excellence, commitment and potential.

Strong academic foundations are built from the earliest years through a range of carefully targeted programmes. At junior cycle, students are supported through Accelerated Reader, which promotes literacy, comprehension and a love of reading, and Freckle Maths, which provides personalised, adaptive learning to strengthen numeracy skills. Computer coding and digital learning initiatives further develop problem-solving, creativity and computational thinking, while a comprehensive Wellbeing programme supports students in building resilience, organisation, self-management and communication skills — all essential for long-term academic success.

Teaching and learning at Coláiste Mhuire places a strong emphasis on higher-order thinking skills. Students are encouraged to analyse, evaluate, reflect and create, while being challenged to achieve at the highest level within a supportive and encouraging environment. High expectations are matched with strong pastoral care, ensuring that students are motivated, confident and well supported in striving for their personal best.

Beyond the classroom, students benefit from a wide range of structured academic supports, including supervised evening study, regular study skills workshops, and carefully planned exam periods designed to help students prepare effectively and manage assessment demands with confidence. These supports foster positive study habits, independence and a strong work ethic.

Coláiste Mhuire also places a significant focus on future pathways and progression. The school has strong affiliations and bridging programmes with local universities and local industries, providing students with valuable insight into further and higher education, career pathways and the world of work. Students are actively supported in identifying and achieving their personal goals, with guidance that is aspirational, informed and student-centred.

A wide range of co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities further enrich academic development. Students can engage with the school’s STEM Team, Debating, and School Newspaper Team, all of which promote critical thinking, communication skills, teamwork and leadership. In addition, students are encouraged to challenge themselves through highly regarded programmes such as MiniMed, an introductory module encompassing all areas of medicine; the TY Law Programme in partnership with Trinity College Dublin; and participation in CTYI at Dublin City University. These programmes allow students to experience third-level learning, deepen subject knowledge and strive for excellence beyond the classroom.

Through a culture of high expectations, innovative academic programmes, strong partnerships and comprehensive student support, Coláiste Mhuire Secondary School continues to provide an exceptional educational experience — one that empowers students to excel academically, develop essential life skills and progress confidently to university, further education and future careers.
